Suntory Beverage & Food Europe Reports Progress Across Sustainability: Sugar Reduction, Emissions Cut, and Sustainable Packaging LONDON – June 5, 2024 - Suntory Beverage and Food Europe (SBFE), producers of iconic soft drink brands Orangina, Lucozade, Schweppes* and Oasis has published its 2023 Sustainability Report on World Environment Day. The comprehensive report highlights the progress made against its sustainability goals in 2023 and underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and social sustainability, aligning perfectly with the global focus on environmental conservation and action on this significant day. The report reveals that SBFE has almost tripled the volume of drinks sold with sugar below 5g/100ml compared to 2015, surpassing the company’s target for 2025. In addition to this impressive achievement, SBFE has launched new low-sugar and low-calorie drinks, providing consumers with healthier choices. Overall, the company has achieved a total reduction of 26% in added sugar content against the 2015 baseline. These efforts are part of SBFE’s broader strategy to promote healthier living and address health concerns such as obesity. In terms of sustainable packaging, following the 2022 milestone of achieving 36% recycled plastic content in its bottles, SBFE proudly announces that they have reached 44% recycled plastic content across its portfolio in 2023. This achievement is marked by significant initiatives, including Schweppes France switching to 100% recycled plastic bottles for their 1-litre and 1.5-litre sizes, and the entire Oasis portfolio transitioning to bottles made from 100% recycled plastic. These milestones represent substantial progress towards the company’s target of reaching 50% recycled plastic content by 2025. SBFE has also made noteworthy strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company achieved a 19.4% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 14% reduction in Scope 3 emissions compared to the 2019 baseline. This reduction accounts for 25,886 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, or the heating of approximately 4,791 houses for one year. SBFE remains committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner across its entire value chain. Pierre Decroix, SBFE’s Chief Executive Officer, commented on the company’s progress: “Our company value ‘Growing for Good’ has been part of our reason for being since the creation of the Suntory Group in 1899 and continues to be our compass today. Our Growing for Good sustainability plan inspires us to be better in everything we do. No where is this more evident than in our focus on creating more healthy drink options for our consumers with a combined strategy of reducing sugar, innovating with new zero drinks and investing in growing our lower sugar ranges.” The 2023 Sustainability Report also highlights SBFE’s Growing for Good framework, which includes action across drinks, resources, society, employees, and partners. In 2023, SBFE donated over 1 million Euros to good causes and community initiatives. To promote one of the company’s core values, ‘Giving Back to Society,’ SBFE launched their internal volunteering platform ‘Together for Good,’ with employees contributing 2,314 hours of volunteering work in the first year. In 2021, SBFE launched their company-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy, which set out clear pathways to progression. As of 2023, 35.3% of employees were women (up from 34.6% in 2022), 50% of the SBFE Executive Committee were women (up from 42% in 2022), and 80% of the Board* were women (up from 67% in 2022). These improvements demonstrate SBFE’s ongoing commitment to supporting women in leadership roles and fostering an inclusive workplace.
