At Suntory, our entire business relies on the blessings of nature, especially water. Not only is water the main ingredient of our products, it also gives us our purpose “Mizu To Ikiru,” or living with water. We believe we have an important role to play in preserving this precious natural resource for future generations.
As part of our commitment to sustainable water management, Suntory is aiming for a 15% reduction in water use at our production plants by 2030. In Europe, our Toledo factory has already reduced water use by 10% as of 2019. Suntory in the UK recently invested £13 million in a new high-speed filling line which uses 40% less energy and water.
We are also leading water conservation efforts well beyond our factories. In Spain, our Guardians of Júcar project aims to improve the quality of surface waters, recover natural areas of the riverbank, deepen understanding of aquatic ecosystems, eliminate invasive species on river banks, and promote public use of these natural spaces.
In France, we’ve signed a 20-year partnership with Grand Parc Miribel Jonage, the country’s largest metropolitan public-protected park, to support water education programs and workshops aimed at helping children and families to understand the role of water. Suntory is also helping to preserve and restore the alluvial forest around the Rhône river.
In the Netherlands, Suntory is sponsoring a project led by the Dutch Society for Nature Conservation to restore the Markermeer, one of the largest freshwater lakes in western Europe, by constructing islands, marshland, and mud flats..
Water is much more than a resource for Suntory’s business; it’s a vital support system and bringer of life to the communities and regions in which we operate. That’s why we continue to invest in water conversation and education activities, as well as reducing water consumption in our own value chain.
